Dr. Judie Harrington is an experienced elementary and middle school teacher, reading teacher, and
college professor. She is a Certified Academic Language Practitioner who works as a tutor for students
with dyslexic and dyscalculia. With a PhD in social studies education, Dr. J loves to help students learn
about history, geography, economics, and politics.

In this class, we will be taking a virtual tour of the world, “visiting” 8 different countries*. I want kids to learn about how people and places in other countries are alike and how they are special. We will use some map skills to locate places and we will sharpen our observation skills as we look at photos and objects from the different countries we visit. We will talk about the different countries to consider how people live, what they like to do, what they like to eat, things that they value, and the places that are important in their country.

Around the World” by Natalia
Diaz and Melissa Owens as a
guiding text.

Week 1:
1. Introductions
2. Making a globe with a balloon: Introduce longitude, latitude, hemispheres, relative location
3. Country visit: Australia

Week 2:
1. Would we find this in China? Thumbs up-down on each item (discuss stereotypes)
2. Other countries of Asia
3. Country visit: China

Week 3:
1. ¼ cup of rice: How much food do we eat? How much do others around the world eat?
2. Country visit: India
3. Book: Monsoon

Week 4:
1. Ancient Greece and the Olympics
2. Country visit: Greece

Week 5:
1. The countries of Africa
2. Would we find this in the United States, Africa, or both?
3. Country visit: Botswana
4. Book: Safari Animals

Week 6:
1. The countries of Europe
2. Country visit: France

Week 7:
1. The countries of South America
2. Country visit: Brazil
3. Book: Victoria Goes to Brazil

Week 8:
1. The countries of North America
2. Draw a picture of a Native American – draw a picture of a Canadian
3. Country visit: Canada

Registration and Cancellation Policy

Registration ends November 25th

This closing date allows us to determine whether or not a class has enough enrollment to run. However, registration will remain open for those classes that still have space and have met their minimum number of students by November 30th at 11:59pm.

• We are unable to offer a refund for cancellations made after the registration window closes.
